Anti Retroviral Therapy

1. Virologic goals: Maximal and durable suppression of viral load, as long as possible to:

Halt disease progression, and
Prevent/reduce resistant variants

2. Immunologic goals: Restoration and/or preservation of immunologic function both

Quantitative i.e. CD4 cell count should be in a normal range
Qualitative i.e. a pathogen-specific immune response

3. Clinical goals: Reduction of HIV-related morbidity and mortality and improvement of quality of life.
